Introduction

Welcome to the Overview for a project to make a cosplay sword inspired by Godslayer, Gamora’s Sword from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Here I can offer you a little insight into the blade that demanded attention, and the character that brings it to life!

While this unlicenced replica is intended for decorative purposes or for use as a cosplay prop, the main reason for building it is someone at work said they wanted one. After looking at the cool design, I thought I’d give it a whirl!

Check out the links at the bottom of the page for a full detailed build guide.

Gamora, The Galaxy Class Killer

After the slaughter of half her people by the man who would become her adopted Father, Gamora’s reputation and skill set ascended beyond the stars! She possesses abilities beyond the scope of any standard human being, boasting boosted strength, speed and durability. Her superhuman agility is also a perfect accompaniment to any sword wielder. The Fiercest Woman in the Galaxy puts it to perfect use cutting through swaths of foes on a regular basis.

On top of her natural abilities, a number of implant enhancements push her powers past the everyday and into the “Living Weapon” category. But she is not just a weapon, she is a Zehoberei; flesh and feelings.

Few characters do a better job of depicting the intimacy of a fellowship, or highlighting the danger of abusive families. For all the combat prowess, it is the humanity (Zehobereity? That sounds like she doesn’t drink…) that makes this character so appealing, so engaging and so utterly, utterly captivating.

Much like other legends of the Marvel Cinematic Universe such as Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr, the actress Zoe Saldana has done such an incredible job at bringing her character to life! At this point, it would be impossible to see anyone else filling that role! With anguish and determination, resolve and the most subtle hint of vulnerability, Gamora is an incredible character and it will be a pleasure to try and make her sword.

We’ve been hired to stop an inter-dimensional beast from feeding on those batteries and I’m going to stop it with a sword?

The Godslayer

The Godslayer has a number of variants, with the primary ones being the longsword and shortsword. I made a shortsword a number of years ago (Prototype I), but the Longsword version will be my next focus. The near-identical nature of the design differences between the short and longswords should allow me to simply scale down the larger one; potentially meaning I will have both available in due course. But I’ll jump off that bridge when I get to it!

The sword itself is an all-metal collapsible blade with a detachable throwing dagger at the handle.

The indented pattern near the handle is something I might try and print separately. It may look best from an SLA Printer and then attached to the PLA body of the sword.

A badass sword for a badass character.

The Process

I’ve made a number of swords and as I mentioned earlier, I made an attempt at one of these previously. Starting this project fresh for a second time should stand me in good stead to complete this project efficiently. That being said, I think that about every project… It never goes as smoothly as I hope.

I am going to try and be ambitious with the construction of this blade. It will be detachable to three pieces (left blade, right blade and throwing knife). I also want it to be structurally sound when in one piece. I’m going to try a number of magnets to achieve this. This isn’t something I’ve done before, but how hard can it be, right? (Can you all hear ominous music? No? Just me?).

The unique construction is going to be critical to the success of the project, I really can’t wait to see how it’ll come together. The fact that I have a much larger printer now when compared to my previous attempt should make life a lot easier, as will the single colour nature of the entire sword.
