Introduction

Welcome!

This is the Overview for my fanmade, unlicensed version of the Kokiri Sword from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. This is the first of five swords in the game, and also the first in the project to build all of them from the game.

This Overview is a little about the source material, the sword itself and a rough prediction of how the project might unfold. If you’re after links to STL files or Build Kits, those will show up in the Assembly Guide when they’re ready.

The links to the full text and image build guides will appear below the images as each stage of the project is finished. Enjoy!

Majoras Mask

Majora's Mask iconic mask

It can be difficult for anything very weird to be perfect, but for some people, the cult classic of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is exactly that.

Originally released on the N64, then later on the 3DS, Majora’s Mask is a rare ‘direct sequel’ to Ocarina of Time, and shares a lot with its legendary predecessor. Despite the lack of the iconic Master Sword, it features some of the weapons and gadgets, such as the Kokiri Sword and later the Hookshot.

Following on from one of the most beloved games of all time is going to be difficult to stand out, especially when a lot of the movement and combat is so familiar. Majora’s Mask managed this, by leveraging a few unique core aspects to become one of the most memorable gaming experiences of the era. The feeling of impending doom, the feeling of piercing eyes above, the feeling of time running out, the feeling that the race is rigged against you; all feelings leveraged into creating an unforgettable experience. Ultimately, the feeling from Majora’s Mask was unique.

Kokiri Sword

Made for a child’s hand, the first sword that you have is named for Link’s former home: The Kokiri Sword.

In game depiction of the sword.

It is the lowest damage output of all the swords, and you (almost!) start the game with it. This is not the first time Link has had one called this, as we also had a Kokiri Sword in Ocarina of Time, but the look in Majora’s Mask is very different. As for the specific look of the one I’ll be making, it’ll be based on the 3DS Remake, as the details are sharper and less open to interpretation.

This short sword features a simple, unadorned blade jutting out from a large gold hilt, with a small metal band securing the two together. The hilt has two outward-facing circles indented into each side. The handle isn’t too visible beneath the rough cloth wrappings and the pommel is a simple blue geometric shape, with a smaller golden face at the bottom.

Build Plan

Usually here I would highlight anything that looks problematic and outline how I plan to build it… But there is no plan here because this honestly looks to one of the simplest builds I’ve ever made: the modelling, printing and finishing all look like they’ll be exceptionally easy.

With the cloth tape on the handle, there is a chance that part may not even need to be processed much at all; less sanding is always good! Some masking will be needed on the pommel, but it is all straight lines, easy!

I’ll aim to keep the blade under 45cm, to ensure the Print It Yourself version has as few parts as possible. Hopefully, it’ll look good, and the blade on the Raw Build version can be one piece.

The Result

For now, it is just the 3D Model and the first print to check assembly that has been completed, which you can see below. As the first Build and beyond gets completed, this will be updated so watch this space! The Assembly Guide below will have practical advice about the build, as well as links to buy.
