Introduction

Welcome!

This is the Overview for my fan-made, unlicensed version of the Razor Sword from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. This is the second of five swords in the game and the second in the project to build all of them.

This Overview is a little about the source material, the sword itself and a rough prediction of how the project might unfold. If you’re looking for links to STL files or Build Kits, those will show up in the Assembly Guide when they’re ready.

Enjoy!

Majoras Mask

Majora's Mask iconic mask

It can be difficult for anything very weird to be perfect, but for some people, the cult classic of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask is exactly that.

Originally released on the N64, then later on the 3DS, Majora’s Mask is a rare ‘direct sequel’ to Ocarina of Time, and shares a lot with its legendary predecessor. Despite the lack of the iconic Master Sword, it features some of the weapons and gadgets, such as the Kokiri Sword and later the Hookshot.

Following on from one of the most beloved games of all time is going to be difficult to stand out, especially when a lot of the movement and combat is so familiar. Majora’s Mask managed this by leveraging a few unique core aspects to become one of the most memorable gaming experiences of the era. The feeling of impending doom, the feeling of piercing eyes above, the feeling of time running out, the feeling that the race is rigged against you; all feelings leveraged into creating an unforgettable experience. Ultimately, the feeling from Majora’s Mask was unique.

Somewhat of an odd duck of a weapon: The Razor Sword.

The Blacksmith at the Mountain Smithy will offer you an upgrade of your Kokiri Sword for an ample sum of 100 rupees. As well as the money, you’ll spend a healthy chunk of time without a sword, asking for a whole day to work on it.

Coupled with the double damage output, the upgrade also changes the look of the weapon to a completely different design.

The Razor Sword features two blades, one slightly longer and curved towards the centre, and the other shorter, completely straight. The two blades are linked in three places, and both sit on top of a chunky hilt, handle and pommel.

The hilt, handle and pommel combo all sport a burned orange underlay with thick metal bandings. The pommel has four spikes jutting out, with a diamond-shaped window to view the underlay.

Often not even purchased by experienced players, as it would shatter after use, much like the Giant’s Knife, the fake Biggoron’s Sword in Ocarina of Time, although at least you get a hundred hits out of it. This tempered-rary blade dulls back to the Kokiri Sword after a hundred hits, or a reversal of time, making it feel somewhat pointless, even before it’s blunted.

And yet…

This is one of my all-time favourite sword designs; I absolutely love this sword’s look!! It is a bizarre mix of understated, underrepresented and underloved, and there is something undefinable about this sword that makes it one of my absolute favourites! It’s safe to say that this entire project line of making All Swords from Makora’s Mask likely wouldn’t have been started without this sword’s inclusion! Genuinely delighted to get to make this!! That being said… I still don’t buy it on playthroughs because it does kinda suck.

Build Plan

There is only one concern here, as everything else about this design is somewhat straightforward: There is no single central pillar I can use as a support spine throughout the entire sword.

I’ve worked around the problem before, for example I used a much shorter support rod for the Tidus Longsword project, and even weaved the rods through mutliple interlocking curved parts between the blade and the spine on Yone’s Azakana Sword project…but both of those at least had *some* central structure to work around, here there is nothing between the blades but three small links!

I will need to overlap the flat edges of each blade to neatly sit in the footprint of the handle to gain any support throughout. This will likely mean a few smaller sets of support rods, rather than one big rod, and a few accompanying ones. Ultimately, this shouldn’t be too difficult, and it may be good practise for the future, as the Fierce Deity Sword has a similar issue, but to an extreme degree compounded due to its size.

The Result

For now, it is just the 3D Model and the first print to check assembly that has been completed, which you can see below. As the first Build and beyond gets completed, this article will also be updated, so watch this space! The Assembly Guide below will have practical advice about the build, as well as links to buy.
